I love to golf, but oh boy is golf boring.
I run this tournament every year, I’m in the process of planning a golf trip with a girlfriend, and I try to find any and all reasons to hit the greens each summer. Although I love the sport, it still doesn’t change my mind that I think golf is boring. And I’m sure I’m not alone in this feeling.
Golf is boring because golf hasn’t adapted to the millennial generation. Golf is (in my opinion) just an old man’s sport.
Baseball was just as boring.
When I was younger, going to the Skydome (now the Roger centre) to watch a Toronto Blue Jays game on toonie Tuesday was a major treat in my youth. This was during a time when the Blue Jays had just won back to back world series championships. There was a ton of excitement at the dome on those hot Tuesday nights in the 90’s.
As I got older, I started to realize how boring baseball actually was to watch. It’s the nature of the game though – it’s slow. Sometimes a game can get up to nine innings without anything actually happening. For someone who grew up with technology, my short attention span couldn’t commit to such a slow game.
But a couple of years ago, something changed. This was before the Blue Jays got back into the playoff spot light and become really exciting again! MLB teams started to attract younger audiences by drawing the audience’s attention to other things besides just the game itself.
DJs got hired, funny intermission videos were created, rap songs became walk out tracks, and players developed personal online brands. By drawing attention to all these other areas of the spot, the boring side of the game isn’t the only thing audiences have to focus on now.
What was dangerously branded as an old man’s spot, Baseball got with the times and has continued to market the game to a younger audience.
Sadly, golf hasn’t figured out how to not be so focused on the game being boring just yet.
Golf Has Rules
Now don’t get me wrong, I understand that golf is a classic that has a lot of proper rules and expectations of players around it. When I went to the Canadian Open last year I was scared to speak louder than a whisper. I can respect the rules of the game. But something needs to happen with this game or else golf will always have a hard time attracting a new audience.
The only time I think I ever payed much attention to the game from an “in the news” standpoint was when Tiger Woods was going through his marital scandal. And if you knew me personally, you would know I could care less about the lives of famous people. I didn’t even know there was more than one Kardashian for years until I watched The People vs. O.J. Simpson.
I will not be able to solve the issue of how to make golf less boring. That’s for the pros to figure out.
Golf is honestly so much fun to play!
Despite how boring I find it is to watch, I still love playing. And I would have never discovered how much I enjoyed playing the game if I never tried it (more about that story in a separate blog post to come).
The point I’m trying to get across here is don’t judge golf on the fact that you never want to watch it on TV. You never know if you’ll enjoy the sport if you don’t give it an honest college try.
A great way to get yourself into the game is to play in golf tournaments. That how I started playing and how many of my friends have developed their own love for the game.
A Pink Ballers tournament is a safe and fun way to dip your toes into the sport. Why not try something new this year and give golf a shot? You might still think it’s boring, but you could find a new passion in life!
